Effect of accidental torsion on seismic response of symmetrical structures

Verica Raduka, Marija Nikolić

Abstract

The difference in seismic response of symmetrical frame structures with different torsional and translational stiffness values, as dependent on selection of accidental torsion modelling method in dynamic analysis, is analysed in the paper. It is demonstrated that dynamic effects of accidental eccentricity have been underestimated in usual quasi-static analyses, which is especially true in the area of torsional resonance. The results obtained have been confirmed by analytical solutions obtained on a simplified mathematical model.
